Eyelid surgery work

  • Upper eyelid surgery. An incision in the natural crease of the eyelid; excess skin is removed and fat is reduced or repositioned. Stitches are typically removed within a week. Upper surgery takes about one hour (source).
  • Lower eyelid surgery. Incisions are often placed within the natural lash line; muscles are tightened and fat removed to treat bags, dark circles and puffiness. Lower surgery takes one to two hours.
  • Transconjunctival blepharoplasty. Fat is removed from under the lower eyelid through an incision inside the lid.
  • Surgery takes place in the accredited surgical facility in the practice building. The eyelid FAQ names ptosis as a cause of blurred vision from drooping lids.
  • Brow lift. Incision placement depends on the degree of brow sag, skin quality and hairline position (source).

Gallery: Dr. Derby's blepharoplasty gallery shows his cases, including bilateral upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty for excess skin, fat and tear trough deformity, and combined upper and lower surgery (source).

Other procedures

His bio lists facial rejuvenation surgery, breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, tummy tuck, mommy makeover and skin removal after weight loss surgery. His gallery also covers facelift, neck lift, facial fat transfer and laser resurfacing (source).

Insurance and cost

  • Drooping eyelid surgery "may be covered by insurance if it is deemed medically necessary," usually when lids obstruct vision; patients need documentation of the impairment (source).
  • "On average, eyelid surgery costs range from $3,000 to $7,500," typically including surgeon's fee, anesthesia and facility costs.
  • The brow lift page gives an average range of $3,000 to $8,000 (source).

Recovery

  • Regular activities can resume within the first few days; bruising and swelling take several months to fully resolve.
  • No driving for the first few days; someone stays with the patient for the first 24 hours.
  • At least one week off work, with an additional week for office or screen-based jobs.
  • Strenuous activity and heavy lifting wait until clearance, normally about six weeks.
  • Sleep on the back with the head elevated for the first couple of weeks.
  • Swelling and bruising after upper eyelid surgery generally subside in 1-2 weeks; optimal results are generally seen at three months. Lower lid scars fade in three to six months.
