Cosmetic or covered by insurance
The same operation, two different routes to it.
You choose it for how your eyes look
You pay the surgeon, the anesthesia and the operating room. Plastic, facial plastic and oculoplastic surgeons do most of it, and the good ones show their results in before-and-after galleries. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons puts the average surgeon fee for an upper blepharoplasty at $3,359, before anesthesia and the facility.
Your lids block your vision
When heavy upper-lid skin or a low lid cuts off the top of your field of vision, Medicare and most insurers cover the operation. A visual field test and photographs show the loss before surgery is approved, and you pay your deductible and coinsurance.
Find a surgeon by specialty
Each specialty has its own ranking, with insurance-based eyelid surgeons kept apart.
Surgeons trained in plastic surgery, which covers cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face and body, including the eyelids.
Surgeons trained in otolaryngology (head and neck surgery) and then in facial plastic surgery.
Ophthalmologists (eye surgeons) with further training in surgery of the eyelids, orbit and tear ducts, most often a two-year ASOPRS fellowship.
Surgeons from several base specialties who practice cosmetic surgery; many hold American Board of Cosmetic Surgery certification, which is not an American Board of Medical Specialties member board.
Ophthalmologists, otolaryngologists, general surgeons and oral and maxillofacial surgeons whose practice site shows cosmetic eyelid work.
Surgeons, most of them ophthalmologists, who bill Medicare for eyelid operations and show no cosmetic eyelid work: no eyelid page, before-and-after gallery or cosmetic society listing.
