Eyelid surgery work

The Spiegel Center has three surgeons: Jeffrey Spiegel, Jacob Tower and Arthur Shektman (our providers). The eyelid page describes the practice's methods (eyelid lift):

  • Surgery takes one to two hours through small incisions along the natural eyelid lines. Fat is removed, reduced or relocated to correct hollowing, sagging skin is trimmed, and absorbable sutures close the incision.
  • Lower lids with bags but good skin can be treated by transconjunctival blepharoplasty, an incision inside the lid; the fat can be removed or moved into the tear troughs. With loose skin or a weak lid, an incision is hidden under the lower lashes and the orbicularis muscle may be tightened.
  • A deep plane lower eyelid lift is offered for festoons, persistent puffiness and deeper structural changes.
  • Upper lids: fat may be removed or added, skin reduced, or a more defined crease created (double eyelid surgery) (double eyelid).
  • Anesthesia can be local, sedation or general, with the anesthesia team at Newton Surgery.
  • Brow lift. Pretrichial, coronal, temporal, direct and endoscopic approaches are described; the endoscopic lift uses two to four small incisions in the hair (brow lift).

Galleries: the blepharoplasty gallery credits each case to a surgeon; on the first page, 2 of 10 cases (one lower and one upper and lower blepharoplasty) are credited to Dr. Tower (blepharoplasty gallery). On the first page of the brow lift and fox eye lift gallery, about 7 of 15 cases are credited to Dr. Tower (brow lift gallery).

Other procedures

The practice offers facelift, neck lift, rhinoplasty, facial feminization surgery and revision, lip lift, body procedures, injectables and energy-based skin treatments (source).

Insurance and cost

  • The eyelid FAQ states that if excess upper lid skin is shown to block peripheral vision on a visual field test, part of the procedure may be eligible for insurance coverage, separate from any cosmetic lower lid work (eyelid lift).
  • No prices are published; cost is discussed at consultation, and financing and payment plans are offered.

Recovery

  • Swelling and bruising peak at two to three days, improve by day 5 to 7, and are usually subtle by 10 days.
  • Most people return to a regular routine in about 6 or 7 days.
  • Contact lenses: wait one to two weeks. Eyelid makeup: about one to two weeks.
  • Upper eyelid results often last 10 to 15 years; lower eyelid surgery is usually permanent.
