Eyelid surgery work
- Upper blepharoplasty. Excess skin and fatty tissue are excised through an incision in the natural eyelid crease. Some muscle may be trimmed, including to reduce bulk for patients with visual field deficits, and some upper eyelid fat may be removed (blepharoplasty).
- Lower blepharoplasty. The incision may sit just under the lash line, inside the eyelid, or at the outer corner of the eye. Lower eyelid fat is removed or repositioned (transposition), conservatively, to avoid a hollow look. Fat grafting may be added for a hollow lower eyelid or midface.
- Lower lid support. The page names lower lid tightening such as a lateral tarsal strip, and cheek augmentation with fat or implants, as complements to lower eyelid surgery.
- Anesthesia. Most patients receive IV sedation from board-certified anesthesiologists; upper eyelid surgery and select lower eyelid procedures can be done under local anesthesia.
- Combined procedures. Brow lift is commonly performed at the same time as upper or lower eyelid surgery, and eyelid surgery is commonly paired with facelift.
- Galleries. Dr. Cain has his own blepharoplasty gallery, two pages of cases (source), and a brow lift gallery (source).
Other procedures
The brow lift page describes endoscopic brow lift with temporal lift and suture fixation without drilling, plus trichophytic, coronal, mid-forehead and direct brow lifts (source). The practice also offers facelift, neck lift, rhinoplasty, forehead reduction, lip lift, chin and cheek augmentation, otoplasty, skin cancer reconstruction, hair restoration, injectables and laser treatments (source).
Insurance and cost
- Upper eyelids that block vision "may be covered by your health insurance and deemed medically necessary," which requires certain tests for approval (blepharoplasty).
- Published prices: upper blepharoplasty $6,000 to $8,000; upper under local $6,000 to $8,500; lower $6,000 to $8,000; lower with fat grafting $7,500 to $9,000; upper and lower $8,000 to $9,500.
- Brow lift: most range from $8,000 to $9,500 (source).
- Care Credit financing is available (source).
Recovery
- Sutures are removed at one week; most patients take about a week off work or school (blepharoplasty).
- No strenuous activity for two weeks.
- Eyes feel swollen and tight; mild bruising may occur. Dry eye symptoms can worsen temporarily.
- Results are described as essentially permanent; a second procedure, when needed, usually comes 10 to 20 years later.
- Brow lift bruising settles around the eyes and resolves in one to two weeks (source).
