Eyelid surgery work

  • Blepharoplasty. Performed as outpatient surgery under local anesthetic; eyelids are tightened, excess skin removed, and excess fat removed or redistributed. Bruising and swelling are typically expected for one to three weeks (source).
  • Brow lift. Two types offered: a direct brow lift (incision above the eyebrow hairs) and an endoscopic brow lift (hidden incisions behind the hairline), both outpatient under local anesthesia (same page).
  • Ptosis repair. Described on the reconstructive surgery page as correcting eyelid droop from weakened lifting muscle; when drooping affects vision, the eyelid or eyebrow lift is treated as medically indicated (source).

Other procedures

The practice is a general ophthalmology group; other doctors on staff offer cataract surgery, LASIK, retina and glaucoma care. Dr. Kavanagh's page also lists treatment of tearing problems, thyroid-related eyelid/orbital disease, eyelid and orbital tumors, and facial trauma (bio).

Insurance and cost

The site states an eyelid or eyebrow lift performed for vision-impairing drooping "is considered a procedure for medical indications and is therefore covered by insurance companies and medicare," confirmed with an office visual field test (source). No price is published.

Medicare eyelid operations, 2022 to 2024

From CMS, Medicare Physician and Other Practitioners by Provider and Service, NPI 1467403659. Medicare pays only when the lids block vision, so these are the medical cases. Cosmetic eyelid surgery is paid by the patient and is not in this record. CMS leaves out any code billed fewer than 11 times in a year.
